Online Learning Formats

Online learning at MPC offers flexible course formats designed to fit a variety of schedules, learning styles, and student needs. Understanding the differences between asynchronous, synchronous, and hybrid courses can help you choose the format that works best for you

Think of this as a regular class that meets online instead of on campus.

  • In a synchronous online class, you attend class online on set days and times.
  • You will meet live with your instructor and classmates (usually on Zoom).
  • Attendance at the scheduled meeting times is required.
  • Your instructor may use Canvas to post grades, assignments, announcements, and other materials.
  • You can ask questions and participate in real time, just like in a face‑to‑face class.

Think of this as a class you complete on your own time, but with regular deadlines and instructor support.

  • In an asynchronous online class, there are no required live meeting times.
  • You complete your work on your own schedule.
  • You must meet assignment deadlines.
  • Course materials (videos, readings, discussions, quizzes, etc.) are available in Canvas.
  • Your instructor will regularly communicate with you, give feedback, monitor your progress, and reach out if you need help.
  • You can also contact your instructor whenever you need support.

Think of this as a class that splits time between campus and online learning.

  • A hybrid class combines in-person and online learning.
  • You will attend some classes on campus at scheduled days and times.
  • You will complete other parts of the course online.
  • Both the in-person and online portions are required.
  • Online work is usually done in Canvas and may include Zoom sessions.
